VeganMofo: Day 1!

Ok, so a less than impressive start. Despite my lack of cooking, photo taking and general free time, I’ve decided to post anyway!

Today my food related activities are limited to grocery shopping at Planet Organic the local organic market. But, I bring you halagonians fantastic news. THEY NOW HAVE DAIYA!!!!

I know, I’m soo excited… It’s lurking in my fridge now, so stay tuned for some reviews and trials.

What’s more as my dad was in town I also splurged on a few new cool vegan items like tofurkey breakfast links and soy yogurts.

I will try to keep up to date with the Mofoing. Mostly a run down of what I manage to eat in a day with my busy schedule and maybe some suggestions for things to make or grab on the go for the busy among us. Specifically, I splurged at the market and bought a lot of processed/ready made foods I normally wouldn’t go near for budget reasons.

However, lately my commitment to not buying pre-made has turned into a commitment to not eating because I’m too lazy/busy/tired etc to make food. Which is bad, so sometimes the extra $ on things like mini soy yogurts or other grab and go foods are justifiable if it means eating something when you would otherwise have nothing, go without or eat out (which is not budget friendly!).

I’ve also been in the bad habit of eating out, a habit I may continue for mofo and do some HRM Vegan Review series of where to eat and what to order!

Happy Mofo everyone!

And because posts are incomplete without photos I bring you Cell Phone shot of the coconut banana creme pie from the HeartWood bakery/cafe. Please excuse the bite marks.

Veganmofo: Lazy day

Today was a very lazy day, the only real moment of excitement was busting out my new Bodum and subsequently drinking three full bodums of coffee today. I think I may have a problem.

Otherwise a short recap of my meals today (sorry no photos).
Breakfast: mocha just-us coffee with silk creamer
2 packs of instance apple cinnamon oatmeal in a lovely soup mug

lunch
(eaten maybe 2 hours after breakfast): Farmer’s market sesame kissed spelt roll with earthbalance
large bowl of leftover soup! [potato broccoli-vcon] (the last of it! including the serving the dog got with breakfast).
more coffee
dinner/packed school meal: A salad, lame but i was out of re-heatable containers. bonus was able to use my cool new to-go-ware!

Romain lettuce, 1 tomato, vegan bacon bits, pita chips and knock off goddess dressing
and a travel mug with the last on the coffee from the am
Salad was kinda like this one:
Simple side salad

second dinner:
My lovely roommate adam brought me back a dragon roll from minatos! yay!

Study period:
another bodum of coffee, 1 litre of pepsi

Further snacking shame: an entire pack of tofurkey slices, yeah I know I’m gross. but I am about to make up for it with a bowl of nooch, garlic and cayenne popcorn! MMM late night snacks.

We really wanted vegan nachos but the weather and sheer laziness has prevented a journey to the 24/7 grocery. Besides, I’m sure the popcorn is healthier….

What is your favourite late night snack?

And you people thought vegan meant healthy

Well as usual, I am here to prove you wrong and bring you down into the gutters of vegan cuisine and eating. No, I’m not going to re-create mike’s Tater pig, but we are headed into Lazy, Processed, No Effort, Heart Attack promotive Eating.

First up on our way to triple bi-pass, my introduction to solid food one week after wisdom tooth surgery. It ain’t pretty, but damn if it isn’t tasty. Simple, spicy fries and gravy. Gross you say? I thought so too, packaged spicy fries are to be enjoyed on their own or preferably not at all, but thanks to my little brother and his disgusting habits, I’ve given it a shot and by Goddess if it isn’t white trash good eatings.

Extremely simple, prepare frozen spicy fries as directed by package. Once fries are done and hot, open your can of mushroom gravy (vegan of course) and ladle on top of plated fries.

Normally I would suggest you heat the gravy first, but as I wasn’t supposed to be eating hot foods this combination of hot fries and room temperature gravy turned out to be a great combination (not warm enough for it to be an issue with my stitches but not so cold I want to hurl and give up eating all together). This was especially helpful if allowed to sit for a few minutes in order to soften up the crispier edges of the fries. Those of you not recovering from Oral Surgery are encourage to eat immediately.

Weird Foods

Sadly this entry lacks photos as it occurred at a friend’s house, James my friends little brother had a package of oriental box rice (the weird beef flavour ones that are vegan, for god knows what reason). So being hungry teenagers and woman Gwyn and I employ James to make us his rice, as it turned out he makes it and adds cinnamon sugar. We thought it was weird and wanted to part of it until he’d made it.

Oddly enough it was amazing. “Beef” flavoured crappy box rice with sugar and cinnamon, soo good. I may sound like a freak, but for anyone daring enough to try it, go for it! I only wish I had a recipe to pass on for you, but honestly this one is so lazy it has two ingredients:
Oriental boxed rice Beef flavour (check labels)
Cinnamon sugar
Prepare rice as directed (add the flavouring too) then serve into bowl and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and stir, the end. Customize the amount of cinnamon sugar you like etc.
